The legendary host suddenly revealed this week that she would be leaving the network after 19 years.

It came despite her being expected to continue in her role until the summer.

However, she was then absent from the broadcast of First Take as Stephen A Smith had to take over.

He will be taking the hosting duties of the show for at least the end of the week.

During Tuesday’s showing, he appeared stunned at the sudden exit of Qerim.

He also admitted that there had been contract negotiations between ESPN and Qerim.

Smith also claimed that the broadcaster wanted the presenter to remain in post but it was her choice to leave.

He said: “Last night, she abruptly resigned as the host of the show.

“And to say that I’m quite sad about it is an understatement. Molly is a friend.

“Molly is a co-worker. Molly is somebody that I have leaned on on many occasions in the past as she has done when it comes to me.

“We have been partners on the show for the last ten years and a lot of times some of these things happen and it’s just uncomfortable to see.

“The details, quite frankly, are none of ya’ll business, but it’s not as if I know all the details.

“There was a contract negotiation that was going on.

“ESPN certainly did not want to lose her, but in the end, she made a decision to walk away from the show, effective immediately.”

She made sure to inform her fans to look out for her next career venture.

She wrote: “I’m so grateful for what this journey has given me: lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and the chance to be part of something truly special.

“Stay tuned. With love and gratitude, Molly.”
