Monster rains, surging seas and storm warnings slam Thailand

Thailand is bracing for more rain and isolated heavy downpours, with the lower central region — including Bangkok — along with the east and south facing the highest risk, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD)’s latest warning.

The weather office said a moderate monsoon trough is moving south across the north, northeast, and upper central regions into a low-pressure cell over the central South China Sea. At the same time, a strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Gulf of Thailand, and lower parts of the country will intensify rainfall.

“People in affected areas should watch out for heavy to very heavy rainfall, flash floods, and overflowing waterways, especially near hillsides and low-lying zones,” the department warned. “Farmers should take precautions to protect their crops.”

Rough seas are also on the cards. Waves in the Andaman Sea are expected to swell to 2–3 metres, with surges over 3 metres during thunderstorms. In the Gulf, waves will reach 1–2 metres and climb above 2 metres in storm-hit zones, reported The Nation.

“All vessels should navigate with caution and avoid thunderstorms,” said the department. “Small boats in the Andaman Sea are advised to remain ashore until conditions improve.”
