Most popular Halloween candy revealed and it’s just knocked Reese’s off the top spot

HALLOWEEN is all about the candy, and in the lead-up to this year’s celebration, the most popular sweet treat has been revealed.

According to data, M&M’s overtook Reese’s Cups for the number one Halloween candy spot last year.

The outlet CandyStore.com has revealed that Halloween celebrators were projected to spend $31.69 on candy on average in 2024.

But the hierarchy of candy has changed, and M&M’s sits at the top spot for the first time, going into Halloween 2025.

Sour Patch Kids have also seen a significant rise in popularity leading into this year’s holiday.

The candy now sits at the number three spot, and candy corn sits in seventh.

Butterfingers have also made their way into the top ten, and according to the findings, they are the most popular in the states of South Carolina and Oklahoma.

SPENDING HABITS

In terms of spending, in 2024, Americans were projected to spend $3.5 billion just on Halloween candy.

Overall, when taking into account other expenses, Americans were thought to be spending a whopping $12.2 billion.

And that projection is down 5% from 2023.

Among those who celebrate Halloween, which is thought to be 172 million Americans annually, 95% will purchase candy.

But those who celebrate need to hurry, as it was found that most Halloween shopping is done in the first two weeks of October.

Over a quarter, or 32%, of Halloween shopping is done online and over half of parents stash Halloween candy to enjoy later in the year.

FALL IS HERE

Now that the fall season is officially here, plenty of retailers are lining up to sell their own Halloween-themed products.

Two rival chains, The Home Depot and Lowe’s, are currently at war over the duelling plastic skeleton decoration.

The Home Depot’s Skelly, a 12-foot, plastic skeleton, has dominated front yards since it was first introduced in 2020.

Halloween dupes

There are several Halloween dupes to help you celebrate on a budget.

Dollar Tree has $3 haunted plants that are 90% cheaper than the ones at Michael’s.

The discount store also has hanging pats for just $1.25, while a major competitor sells them for $15.

Pottery Barn fans found a dupe for the store’s famous floating ghosts that are 61% cheaper.

Shoppers even found a dupe for Disney’s famous character pumpkins at Kohl’s.

But this year, Lowe’s is vying for a piece of the pie, selling its version that stands at 20ft.

Shoppers can find it on the Lowe’s website right now for $269, and it features a white LED light to illuminate a garden in seconds.

The skeleton has huge arms that can be manoeuvred into different poses.

It also has secure tethers that will keep it secure on the ground and LED eyes that can be controlled using a remote.

The Lowe’s skeleton is $30 cheaper than the one at The Home Depot.

But The Home Depot is also selling a range of other Halloween decorations for this year.

There’s also Skelly’s Cat, a five-foot-long cat with an adjustable mouth and orange eyes.

Skelly’s Dog is a seven-foot-long skeleton dog with a poseable jaw.
