NBA legend Dwight Howard suffers devastating personal tragedy after horror hit-and-run incident as he begs fans for help

DWIGHT HOWARD has suffered a devastating personal tragedy after his dog was killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident.

The NBA legend is in mourning after revealing his beloved dog, Sunday, died after being hit by a car on June 18 in Suwanee, Georgia.

The NBA legend revealed his beloved dog, Sunday, had been killed in an alleged hit-and-run[/caption]

He appealed for the public’s help for information following a heartbreaking tribute post[/caption]

The three-time Defensive Player of the Year paid tribute by sharing a series of pictures of himself and the Belgian Malinois on his Instagram page.

He begged for answers to help him find out the truth of what had happened after a car struck the pet and didn’t stop after it had got loose.

The center said: “I’ve been trying to hold this in… I really have but it’s killing me inside to get answers!

“I need answers and I won’t stop searching until I find out what happen to my beautiful Sunday.

“Rest in love, Sunday. You’ll always be my baby. I’ll carry your heart with mine forever.”

“Please, if anyone has any information regarding a Belgian Malinois that was hit by a car on June 18th 2025 in Suwanee, Georgia, please let me know.”

In a lengthy tribute post 39-year-old said: “From the moment I got you, Sunday, you were more than just my dog… You were my peace. My protector.

“A reminder of everything beautiful and calm just like those early Sunday mornings. You hugged like no other. Barked at nothing like it meant everything.

“And every time I called your name, you came running full speed like your only mission was to love me.

“You waited at the door for me every single day, just to wrap your paws around me. And I’m gonna miss those hugs more than I can put into words.


“You were joy. You were warmth. You were my girl. And your life was cut short too soon.

“You helped me Smile through all the storms I’ve been through but what do I do now that my Sunday Sunshine is gone.

“I was having a great time in New York this past week until I got the news that my Sunday got loose and was hit by a car that kept going.

“I’m devastated because you were the dog that never left my side, the dog that stuck to my hip at all times, and the one time you wander off without me being there someone takes you away from me.”

Tributes poured in from fans about the heartbreaking news, with one writing: “My condolences brother Sunday was a beautiful dog. May you find the answers and have peace.”

A second said: “I’m so sorry D.”

A third added: “R.I.P Sunday.”

Howard has not retired from basketball completely, but has left the NBA behind after 18 seasons.

The eight-time All-Star had not played in the league since 2022, having won his first ring in 2020 with a LeBron James inspired LA Lakers.

But he now plays in the BIG3 league in Taiwan.

New rights deal

The NBA signed an 11-year deal with three networks for the league’s rights from the 2025-26 season.

And there will be no games on TNT for the first time since the network launched in 1988.

The Walt Disney Company will continue to show the league with 80 regular-season games across ESPN and ABC.

They will also show around 18 playoff games from the first and second round, a Conference Finals series for 10 of the 11 years, and remain the home of the NBA Finals.

NBC will return as an NBA broadcaster for the first time since 2002.

The network will show up to 100 games per season across it’s channels and Peacock streaming service.

It will also be the home of NBA All-Star and show approximately 28 playoff games from the first and second round.

NBC will show one Conference Finals Series for six of the 11 years, rotating with new broadcaster Amazon Prime.

Amazon will show 66 NBA regular-season games including one on Black Friday.

The streaming service is also the home of the latter stages of the NBA Cup and the entire Play-In Tournament.

Prime will also broadcast around one third of the playoff games in the first and second round.
