THE NBA’s first active openly gay player, Jason Collins, has announced a brutal private health battle.
The basketball league shared a statement on the 46-year-old’s health situation.

Collins played 13 seasons in the NBA, as he started and ended his career with the Nets.
He now serves as an ambassador for the league.
Unfortunately, Collins will be undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, his family revealed on Thursday.
“NBA Ambassador and 13-year NBA veteran Jason Collins is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor,” the NBA said in a statement.
“Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason’s health and well-being.”
Collins retired from the NBA in 2014 after playing for the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and back to the Nets after they moved to Brooklyn.
He came out as gay in 2013, becoming the first publicly gay athlete in the four main North American sports leagues.
“If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand,” Collins said during his announcement.
Social media users have given their best wishes to Collins and his family.
“I hope the treatment goes well. Get well soon, Jason,” one wrote.
“Oh no. Best wishes,” another commented.
“Prayers for him and his family,” a third added.
“Sending positive vibes and prayers your way, Jason,” a fourth said.
“Prayers up,” a fifth shared.

The Nets also shared a message on devastating news regarding Collins.
“Sending our love and support to @jasoncollins98 and his family,” the Nets wrote on X.
Collins averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game in his career.
He got married to longtime partner Brunson Green in June.
