NBC cancels hit drama after just one season as Peacock declines to save show

NBC has canceled a hit drama after just one season as Peacock declines to save the show.

Fans – and cast members – have been left reeling after the news of Grosse Pointe Garden Society being canceled, with many taking action by signing a petition to bring it back for a second season.

According to Deadline, it was “ultimately decided that it would be hard for the series to grow its audience on Peacock”, which in turn meant that the show about a gardening club with a murderous secret was axed.

A renewal by NBC was “out of the question”, according to the outlet, due to the mystery drama being a “soft linear ratings performer”.

A petition has even been made in order to bring back the show for a second season.

“Bring back Grosse Pointe Garden Society for a second season,” is the title of the petition which has been posted on Change.org.

With over 33 signatures in two days, fans of the show are desperate for it to be renewed despite the solemn news.

“It’s nice to see the change of pace of a show set in Michigan instead of something set in NYC or Chicago for the four-hundredth time and no matter where it’s filmed,” the description of the petition reads.

Outlining all of the positives that show had, the petition-maker also said: “Shows need room to be cult classics and don’t deserve to be canceled if they’re not megahits, I can name a lot of shows that started on a similar path and were let grow to massive success.”

One person commented on the petition, saying: “GPGS is a show that challenges and engages viewers on several levels: its mystery, the timeline, the characters’ complex and developing relationship, and the story’s themes.

“Not to mention the performances and production quality. It’s even stronger on rewatch. NBC is missing the opportunity to develop the show into a strong property and enthusiastic fanbase.”

While another said: “I loved this show!! It’s really well done and kept me intrigued each episode! It’s a shame to cancel it.”

And as well as fans of the show, the cast of the series are mourning its axing too.

Melissa Fumero, who played the leading role of Birdie in the series, took to social media to bid an emotional farewell to her character.

“Oh, Birdie. You were one for the books,” she emotionally wrote.

“You felt like an amalgamation of every role I’ve ever played.

WHY would NBC cancel such an incredibly written show?

“I’ll miss so many things about this job, but most of all I will miss the incredible group of humans it brought together.”

She continued: “I won’t miss the shoes. It’s really hard to make a show.

“Even harder to keep it on air. I’ll forever be proud of what we made.

“Thanks for watching,” she concluded.

Commenting on Melissa’s post, one person said: “I loved this show. I was so invested. WHY would NBC cancel such an incredibly written show?”

Another added: “I’m so sad that the show did not get picked up again. So many unanswered questions. Regardless you were amazing in the show! Love you and I know I’ll see you on the screen again.”

And a third penned: “My God, what does it take to keep a show on the air these days? This was an amazing show!”

As well as Melissa playing the role of Birdie, other actors starred in the series.

Aja Naomi King played Catherine, AnnaSophia Robb rook on the role of Alice, and Ben Rappaport as Brett.
