Marino went for a routine checkup, and only recalled feeling “a little fatigued.”

“I wasn’t really working out as much as I should — because I used to work out when I played all the time and I kind of got away from that a little bit,” Marino told PEOPLE.

It turns out that there was something wrong with Marino, and it was caught during his checkup.

“Those are the things I kind of noticed,” Marino said.

“Then they told me I had a fatty liver. I had MASH.”

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, also known as MASH, was once known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

The condition appears when fat cells build up in the liver.

If gone untreated, MASH can lead to liver cancer.

Marino revealed that “the doctors right away said that can be reversible, it can be taken care of, but, mainly for me, they were saying, like, ‘You gotta work out. You got to lose weight.’”

The legendary Miami Dolphins quarterback spoke out about his health improvements as part of Novo Nordisk’s Unordinary Stories campaign.

The campaign sees athletes speak out about their health journeys.

Marino revealed that he relies on friends and family to help him with his health.

His former teammate, Terry Kirby, trains Marino at his gym.

Marino’s wife, Claire goes on nightly walks and bike rides with him.
