Nissan pulls the plug on SUV after going head to head with Ford

NISSAN chiefs have discontinued one of its SUVs – just years after launching it as part of a plan to compete against rival car giants.

Execs are pulling the plug on its Ariya model – for the time being at least.

A 2026 version of the Ariya electric vehicle will not be rolling off production lines, as reported by Automotive News.

It’s not known if the car will be making a comeback in the future.

Bosses said the move was part of efforts to reallocate resources toward the 2026 Leaf.

The 2025 Ariya can go from 0 to 60mph in under five seconds and has three drive modes.

Its features include safety tech – ranging from blind spot warnings to rear automatic braking and high beam assist tools that help night-time drivers.

But, stats revealed how the car giant had been struggling to sell the electric vehicle, according to a company dossier.

In 2024, just 9,300 units were sold and this number increased to 11,619 in 2025.

By comparison, almost 33,000 units of the Nissan Kicks were sold in 2024.

That number has jumped to more than 50,000 already this year.

The Nissan Kicks has a 141 horsepower and prices start at around $21,830.

The Ariya was launched in 2022 and was viewed as a bid to take on the likes of Tesla and Ford.

Ford’s Mustang Mach-E has outperformed the Ariya in terms of sales.

The 2025 Mustang Mach-E, which retails from $37,995, has a range of 320 miles and drivers are expected to rack up around $2,982 in fuel savings over a three year period.

There are four Mustang Mach-E models available.

Production is being stopped ahead of the release of the 2026 Nissan Leaf, that will roll of belts in the fall of this year.

The Leaf will come in three colors, ocean blue, black, and gun metallic.

And, its starting price is less than $30,000.

The car will possess 3D holographic tail-lights and 19 inch aluminium alloy wheels.

Inside, drivers will be able to charge their cellphones without bringing a cable.

And, gone are the days of starting a car with a key.

This is because cars can be started via the My Nissan App.

The U.S. Sun reported how Nissan is trimming its global workforce and shutting down seven manufacturing plants by 2027.
