Off-price retailer that’s ‘stealing the throne’ from Big Lots to open 11 more locations this October

A MAJOR off-price retailer is opening up 11 locations in October across several U.S. states.

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, which has been said to be “stealing the throne” from Big Lots, announced the opening of more stores on its website.

Seven of these stores are opening in former Big Lots locations.

Ollie’s is a discount retailer that sells closeout merchandise and excess inventory across its over 600 locations.

The retailer sells discounted items like cookware, toys, games, electronics, flooring, houseware and food.

DOORS OPEN

The chain already opened two stores on October 1 in Painted Post, New York and Mount Vernon, Illinois.

The next two stores are set to open on October 8 in Mountain Home, Arkansas and Shelbyville, Indiana.

Four stores are opening on October 9.

Two stores will hit Texas in the cities of Kerrville and New Braunfels.

Foley, Alabama and Washington, Missouri, will also see grand openings on October 9.

Ollie’s is opening up a location on October 15 inside an old Big Lots store in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

A store will be hitting the Park Village shopping center in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, on October 22.

The next day, the chain is set to open a store in the old Big Lots off Battlefield Parkway in Springfield, Missouri.


On October 30, Ollie’s is set to open two stores.

One store will open in Brunswick, Ohio, next to another discount retailer, Dollar Tree.

Cranston, Rhode Island will also see a store open its doors on October 30.

Each store opening announcement notes shoppers can save up to 70% off merchandise at the stores.

OLLIE’S TAKEOVER

Ollie’s has long been scooping up Big Lots locations since the retailer filed for bankruptcy.

The Pennsylvania-based retailer acquired 18 former locations through bankruptcy auction in the first quarter of 2025.

The company went on to report a strong first quarter.

President and CEO Eric van der Valk said during an earnings call, “We believe we are well positioned to benefit and continue to serve our customers with amazing deals.”

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in September 2024, entering a sale agreement with Nexus Capital Management LP, who agreed to acquire the company’s assets and business operations.

The bankruptcy came after the company struggled with high inflation and interest rates.

After Big Lots was sold to Gordon Brothers, hundreds of leases were put on sale in January 2025.

Amid the bankruptcy struggles, Big Lots was able to issue new waves of store openings in April. The retailer opened 219 locations between April and June,
