Old Courthouse roof replaced via hanging basket

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Work is being done on the clocktower of the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown Sioux Falls.

KELOLAND News spoke with APX Construction’s Jessica Crawford on Wednesday afternoon, who told us that the company has been at work for the past few weeks, replacing windows and repairing the roof of the old courthouse.

Crawford said the roof is shingled with slate, and that the existing tablets are over 100-years-old.

APX began working on the clocktower Wednesday and after working with their partners at Heyn Brothers Roofing, they determined that the best way to do the work was by suspending a basket from a 193-foot tall crane.

Inside the basket are two workers, who remove the shingles by hand, placing them in the basket while they work, and then bringing them down to ground level to be unloaded before going back up.

Crawford said the determination was made that the basket method was both the safest and most efficient way to complete is part of the project.

The new slate shingles, 400 of them, are sourced from Virginia, according to Crawford. She said the project to repair the tower should take up to two weeks.
