‘Out of funk’ Caitlin Clark suffers fresh major new blow as Indiana Fever star struggles again on return from injury

CAITLIN Clark shot just 1-10 from three-point range as the Indiana Fever lost 89-81 to the Las Vegas Aces last night.

The WNBA superstar, 23, struggled from deep for the second game running.

Clark returned from a quad injury earlier this month.

The former Iowa star was initially back with a bang, scoring 32 points as the Fever beat the New York Liberty 102-88 in the Commissioner’s Cup.

She then followed that up with a 20-point effort during Indiana’s feisty 88-71 triumph over the Connecticut Sun.

In back-to-back defeats since, however, Clark has struggled.

The second year guard went 3-14 from the field and 0-7 from three as the Fever sank to an 88-77 loss to the Golden State Valkyries.

Clark then shot 7-20 overall and 1-10 from three against the Aces.

The former No1 pick did contribute 19 points and 10 assists, but it wasn’t enough as A’ja Wilson’s Las Vegas squad grabbed the win.

Shockingly by Clark’s extraordinary standards, she has made just one of her last 17 three-point attempts.

Speaking after last night’s game, the sharpshooter was calm about the situation.

She said: “I mean, there are going to be stretches that are really good and there’s going to be stretches that aren’t as good. And obviously it’s frustrating.

“You want them to go in, and even tonight, I felt like there was a few that felt really good off my hand, and it just didn’t go down.”

Clark then added: “So it’s just like, it’s just frustrating… I think the challenge for myself going forward is just [to] continue to pour into every other aspect of the game, and I can continue to have an impact in all those other areas.

“I thought I got to the rim well, it was just certainly a tough shooting night.

“And, you know, you’ve got to find a way to continue to shoot and remain confident in myself, because I know I’ve put the time in… I don’t feel like it’s anything that’s off, necessarily.

“But yeah, would be nice if [the shots] went down.”

Clark is often targeted by very physical opposing defenders.

During last week’s win over Connecticut, Clark was poked in the eye by defender Jacy Sheldon.

After pushing Sheldon off, Clark was viciously shoved to the ground by Marina Mabrey.

The Indiana superstar received a technical foul for the incident, while Mabrey somehow wasn’t ejected – although the WNBA subsequently upgraded her to a Flagrant-2 foul.

Clark’s “enforcer” team-mate Sophie Cunningham went on to be ejected in the fourth quarter for a hard foul on Mabrey, with the Connecticut guard also being handed a second tech.
