The defeat was the worst possible way for the Chiefs to start the 2025 season.
They had been hoping to lay down an early marker and reclaim the Super Bowl title in February.
However, against the Chargers, they lacked energy and were well beaten.
Mahomes, 29, has spoken since the loss and warned his teammates that they need to put in much more energy if they want a successful season.
He said: “They came out with more energy than we did, their defense than our offense.
“I thought we had energy at practice yesterday and all throughout the week.
“But if you don’t come out with the right mindset, you get beaten.
“The Chargers came out with the right mindset, and they beat us.
“They definitely came out with more energy than we did.
“In this league, everybody’s too good for you not to match the energy of our opponent, so I think we learned a valuable lesson.”
Mahomes’ comments on the performance were echoed by head coach Andy Reid.
He insisted that he needs to get more out of the players after a “flat” first half.
He said: “We can learn from this as we move forward.
“I’ve got to make sure I get my team in a better state there coming out, playing with more emotion.

“We were a little flat that first half, and that cost us.
“The first half we were off a bit, and then the second half it picked up a bit.
“I’ve got to make sure that we start faster.
“I’ve got to make sure that we come out with better emotion. I thought they did a better job in that area.”
The Chiefs will have the chance to install some much-needed confidence in Week 2.
They take on last season’s Super Bowl tormentors the Philadelphia Eagles in a chance for revenge.
