Pete Carroll set NFL record on Sunday that beats New England Patriots legend Bill Belichick

PETE Carroll has made history as the Las Vegas Raiders beat the New England Patriots 20-13 on Sunday.

The win sees head coach Carroll claim an impressive NFL record from the Patriots.

At 73 years and 357 days, Carroll became the oldest head coach in the league’s history.

He takes the crown from Patriots icon, Bill Belichick.

Belichick, now 73, left the Boston-based side in 2023 after 24 legendary seasons.

He created a dynasty with quarterback Tom Brady, 48, winning six Super Bowls.

Belichick has since turned his hand to college football, leading the North Carolina Tar Heels this season.

With Carroll taking over as the league’s oldest coach, it is the start of a new era in Las Vegas.

Carroll began his NFL career as the Buffalo Bills‘ defensive backs coach in 1984 before joining the Minnesota Vikings a year later.

In 1990, he took over as the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets.

The 1994 campaign saw him earn his first role as a head coach for the Jets, finishing bottom of the AFC East.

He spent the following two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers before taking over at the Patriots.

Ironically, Carroll was replaced by Belichick in New England, with the record-breaker returning to college football with the USC Trojans.

After nine seasons with USC, he returned to the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, where he would spend 14 years.

He won Super Bowl XLVIII as the Seahawks dominated the Denver Broncos for a 43-8 win.

While he stepped down as the Seahawks head coach for the 2024 campaign, Carroll has returned to the NFL to coach the Raiders.

Speaking in a post-game press conference, the Raiders boss has laid down a marker for quarterback Geno Smith, 34, to lead a successful season.

“For him to complete over 70 percent of his passes again, he’s been doing this,” said Carroll. “Geno [Smith] had a regular game today.”

“I don’t think it was a big statement game today. It was what he does. He got rushed a little bit today. That kind of changed his opportunities to have an even bigger day.”

The coach’s locker room speech highlighted this desire to win as quarterback Smith awarded Carroll with the game ball.

“I hope you can feel what it feels like now,” Carroll said. “This is why we work so hard. If we keep staying with it, it’s going to happen, and it happened again.”

Carroll’s Raiders will be back in action on Monday as they host the Los Angeles Chargers at Allegiant Stadium.
