Pick axe involved in SF assault, police say

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – At 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sioux Falls police were called to an aggravated assault report at the 4300 Block of East 12th Street.

The caller reported there was a man who was threatening to kill his mom and brother with a piece of wood outside of a nearby business, Sioux Falls Police spokesman Aaron Benson said during Thursday’s briefing. The suspect had also threatened to come back with a gun later on.

Officers on scene spoke with one of the victims. He reported that he was working in his shop nearby when he saw a man outside going through a vehicle in the parking lot.

He approached the man to try and get him to stop from potentially stealing any items from the car. The suspect then took out a large piece of wood and struck him in the wrist with it, causing minor injury.

The victim managed to take the piece of wood away from the suspect, and the suspect went to a different area of the parking lot, grabbed a pick axe, and approached another victim. The suspect swung the pick axe at them.

The suspect then chased this victim and two more victims around the parking lot before eventually dropping the axe and leaving the scene. No injuries were reported.

Around 15 minutes later, officers located the suspect walking near 10th Street and Bahnson Avenue and took him into custody.

The suspect was identified as Baruti Ndabyo, a 35-year-old Sioux Falls resident. Ndabyo was taken to jail for three counts of aggravated assault and one count of simple assault.
