A POPULAR clothing retailer that’s often pitted against Macy’s has confirmed plans to open new locations in 2026.
The store will expand the company’s presence in a major US state, despite several reports of locations being forced to close.

Nordstrom has announced plans to open a new location in Encinitas, California, in spring 2026.
The new 4,000-square-foot store will be located at El Camino Promenade.
This space is already home to retail favorites such as TJ Maxx, Bevo, Five Below and Dollar Tree.
Gemma Lionello, President of Nordstrom Rack, said: “We look forward to being a part of the Encinitas community and serving our customers with an amazing offering of great brands at great prices.
“We’re excited to grow our footprint in the San Diego market and introduce new customers to the Nordstrom experience.”
The El Camino Promenade is owned and operated by an affiliate of Kimco Realty.
Genevieve Anderson, Property Manager at Kimco Realty, added: “We’re thrilled to welcome Nordstrom Rack to El Camino Promenade and the vibrant Encinitas community.
“As one of the most recognized names in fashion retail, Nordstrom Rack is a perfect complement to our diverse tenant mix and reflects our continued commitment to bringing quality, convenience, and style to North County shoppers.”
This move will expand Nordstrom‘s presence in the state, as it already operates 26 Nordstroms and 68 Nordstrom Rack stores in California.
This has generated more than 12,800 jobs statewide, and even more will be created as a result of the Encinitas store next year.
Nordstrom is benefitting its communities in other ways, as for the past four years has donated more than $2 million in support of its long-term partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the United States.
The proceeds fund the recruitment and training of adult mentors.
NORDSTROM CLOSURES
The news of the Encinitas store comes as Nordstrom has announced a slew of closures in the past few months.
In June, Nordstrom announced it would be closing a location inside the Saint Louis Galleria in Missouri this summer after 14 years.
US braces for ‘45,000 store closures’
Some 45,000 bricks-and-mortar stores could close in the next five years, experts have warned.
Several major retailers have announced store closures or gone out of business altogether in recent years.
In 2023, chains such as Foot Locker announced plans to close up to 400 outlets by 2026.
While, other well-known retailers like Tuesday Morning and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams filed for bankruptcy in 2023.
Bed Bath & Beyond has closed all of its brick-and-mortar stores and is now an online-only retailer.
The most affected retailers have been clothing, consumer electronics, sporting goods, hobby, book, music, and home furnishing stores since the start of 2019.
UBS has predicted the total number of retail stores will drop by 45k from 958k to 913k.
Despite that, the report says that certain stores should thrive while others decline.
It said retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, and Target, could be among the winners.
It is set to close on August 24, marking the end of the company’s lease on that particular location.
A spokesperson told local NBC affiliate KSDK: “We believe we’ll be best able to serve customers in the area by leveraging our surrounding stores and through our digital channels.
“Decisions like this are never easy, and we understand the impact they have on our team members.
“We’re committed to taking care of our employees through this transition, including supporting those who are interested in finding another role within Nordstrom.”
The Nordstrom is set to be replaced by a Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Then, in July, another Nordstrom location in Santa Monica, California, was announced for the chopping block.
This location has been standing for 15 years, but will be closing just two days after the one in St Louis, on August 26.
On January 3, Nordstrom closed its spot at the Northshore Mall in Peabody, Massachusetts.
Just a few months later, on March 8, Nordstrom shuttered a store at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Massachusetts.
