Popular grocery chain that’s ‘better than Kroger’ to open first-ever store in state – with three more coming


A POPULAR grocery chain that some believe to be better than Kroger has confirmed its plans to open the first-ever store in a US state.

The chain is planning its expansion for the coming year and beyond, which will also see it expand in some familiar states.

Wegmans is charting the next phase of its growth, just a few years after it hit an important milestone.

Inn 2019, the chain hit the 100 store mark, and currently operates about 112 across eight states.

These include in Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

This year already, Wegmans has brought out new stores, namely in lake Grove, New York.

It opened on February 26, per The US Sun.

Now, summer is becoming the stage for more Wegmans stores.

On June 25, Wegmans is coming to Rockville, Maryland, its ninth location in the state.

And after that, the chain is coming to Norwalk, Connecticut.

This new location is opening on July 23 and will span 92,000-square-feet.

Connecticut is joining the list of states where Wegmans operates, a chain which has its devoted fans online.


On social media, shoppers have even said that Wegmans is better than Kroger, one of the biggest names in the game.

On Facebook, one supporter wrote: “For my Colorado Friends and New York family.

“Why is Wegmans better stocked than Kroger or Albertsons?”

In the comments of the post, one person said: “Wegmans is still small enough to care about its customers and community.”

Wegmans has boasted about the importance it has for its community and employees.

CEO Colleen Wegman said: “It’s our goal to visit every store at least once a year because we want a personal relationship with our store management.

“Our grandfather started that tradition, so we like to stay small enough where we can still do that.”

FUTURE PLANS

After the Connecticut launch, Wegmans is looking ahead to 2026, with some anticipated stores set to open.

There are plans tom open in Charlotte, North Carolina and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Pittsburgh store is expected around mid-January,k and has been highly requested by those living in the city.

Dan Aken, vice president of real estate and store planning at Wegmans, said: “We’ve received thousands of requests for a Wegmans in the Pittsburgh region since opening our first Pennsylvania store over 30 years ago.

“We’re excited to have finally found the right location to bring Wegmans to the Pittsburgh area.”

Those in Pittsburgh and Charlotte can expect new Wegmans stores to bring about plenty of new job opportunity.

Each of the new stores will create about 400 to 500 jobs for local residents.
