Powerball chiefs hunt for player sitting on $1m unclaimed ticket as jackpot rockets to $1.3bn

A $1 MILLION ticket is still unclaimed in Massachusetts, and the clock is already ticking for the player to show themselves.

Powerball players have been unable to claim the game’s jackpot for over 40 rollovers, but chiefs are still hunting smaller prize winners in the meantime.

The $1 million ticket was bought at a convenience store in the Worcester area, and the numbers were drawn on August 30.

Unlike many states in the US, Massachusetts does not have a six month claim window.

This means that the player has a year from when the numbers are drawn to come forward.

The winning numbers for this ticket were: 3-18-22-27-33 and the Powerball was 17.

According to the Massachusetts Lottery website, prizes over $103,000 must be claimed at the headquarters based in Dorchester.

The next Powerball drawing is set for September 3, where players face one of the biggest jackpots in the game’s history.

The jackpot sits at $1.3 billion for Wednesday night’s drawing, marking the 41st jackpot rollover.

It’s just one more rollover away from equalling the most the game has ever seen, at 42.

The last time the Powerball jackpot was one was in California on May 31 and was worth $204.5 million.

TIPS TO WIN

In an exclusive chat with The US Sun, Jared James, the founder of Lotto Edge, shared his tips to winning the jackpot.

James recommends three pieces of advice, the first one being to use the entire play slip, and paying close attention to the numbers you use.

He said that choosing lucky numbers may sound compelling, but puts players at a disadvantage.

James claimed that through research at Lotto Edge, the company found out how low chances were if you picked lucky numbers.

Lucky lottery numbers – fact or fiction?

The U.S. Sun spoke exclusively with professor of mathematics at Davidson College, Tim Chartier, who revealed the truth behind lucky numbers.

Scooping up a jackpot prize in a lottery game such as Powerball or Mega Millions involves correctly guessing a series of numbers.

Many players swear by certain numbers, sticking with digits such as birthdays, anniversaries, or ages – but do these numbers statistically carry the luck that players believe they do?

According to Chartier, they do.

“I think a number is lucky if you have fun playing it and it improves your experience of winning,” he said.

“The big lotteries are, statistically speaking, a chance to dream of being a multi-millionaire or even billionaire. If playing a certain number heightens that experience, then yes!”

However, the lottery expert clarified that aside from the feel-good implications of playing your “lucky numbers,” no number is truly lucky when it comes to the lottery.

“All numbers are equally likely,” said Chartier.

He explained that even though all numbers are equally likely, some may seem to appear more often.

For example, rolling a six-sided die six times does not guarantee that you will roll each number exactly once.

He said: Playing only birthdays and anniversaries limits numbers up to 31.

“Less than 3% of drawings had all winning numbers 31 or below.

“Lottery drawings are random, so no number has a built-in advantage.”

The expert then recommended that drawing patterns on your slip would not work.

Some players might be tempted to do this on their slips, James said, but this does not make a difference or give them an advantage.

His third and final tip is to pick a good share of even and odd numbers on your ticket.

Commenting on Lotto Edge’s analysis, he said: The best mix was three even and two odd or two even and three odd.

“About 64% of winning results had this mix of even and odd.”
