Philbin was a superstar for the Jets, playing with the team from 1964 to 1972.

In that time, he racked up 65 sacks and was named to two Pro Bowls.

He played just one season with the Eagles at the end of his career in 1973.

Philbin still has the fourth-most sacks in Jets history.

His 14-sack season in 1968 helped propel the Jets to their one and only Super Bowl win.

He also won an AFL Championship with the Jets before the AFL and NFL merged in 1966.

Philbin was voted to the AFL All-Time Team in 1970 after the merger was complete.

He never made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but was inducted into the Jets Ring of Honor in 2011.

“I do remember when we played the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoff game [after the 1969 season] — he had a separated shoulder,” John Schmitt, a Jets center from 1964-1974 said on Wednesday via the Jets.

“They made up a leather harness that was a half-inch thick that was wrapped around his chest, and they had chain-link fence holding the leather arm piece to the chest piece.

“You never saw such a barbaric thing. And he played the whole game against Kansas City.

“He was a damn tough player and I loved the man.”

NFL fans have flocked to social media to share an outpouring of support for Philbin’s family after his death.

“Rest in peace,” one fan said.
