Rafael Devers faces Boston Red Sox redemption in just days after blockbuster San Francisco Giants trade

MLB slugger Rafael Devers can get some revenge on his former Boston Red Sox team after Beantown sent him to the San Francisco Giants over the weekend.

The Red Sox traded the disgruntled three-time All-Star Devers to the Giants in a stunning blockbuster deal on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, Devers slugged a home run against the New York Yankees, which helped the Red Sox win 2-0 and sweep the first-place division rivals.

But just hours later, the Red Sox dealt the 28-year-old, who’s arguably one of the best hitters in baseball, to the Giants in exchange for some pitching and prospects.

The Red Sox acquired pitchers Kyle Harrison, who was optioned to Triple-A hours after the deal, Jordan Hicks, and prospects James Tibbs and Jose Bello.

Boston made the decision after the two sides had a fractured relationship due to disagreements over his defensive position.

Devers is now a Giant for the next nine-plus years thanks to his 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension he signed with the Red Sox during the 2023 offseason, and now he can get some redemption soon.

On Friday, Devers and the Giants will host the Red Sox in the first of a three-game series at Oracle Field in San Francisco.

The two-time Silver Slugger will look for revenge against the team that traded a homegrown player and helped them capture a World Series title in 2018.

The saga between Devers and the Red Sox began when he balked at moving off third base – the position where he had spent his entire career – after the Spring Training signing of free agent Alex Bregman.

The Red Sox failed to give any warning about being interested in Bregman to Devers, who shared his frustration before eventually agreeing to be their designated hitter.

Then, in May, Boston lost first baseman Triston Casas to a season-ending injury.

The Red Sox asked Devers to move to first base, and he declined and even told the front office that they “should do their jobs” and add a first baseman instead.

The pair’s relationship had clearly taken a turn for the worse, but Devers has played in each game and currently has career-highs in on-base percentage (.402) and OPS+ (152).

Devers helped the Red Sox to an 8-2 record in the last 10 games and get the team within just 0.5 games of a playoff spot after a slow start to the season.

But all that is moot as Boston has clearly chosen to take the band-aid off and move on from a mopey Devers, who was their best hitter, while dumping his whole salary and building for the future.

Red Sox fans, understandably, have been irate over the trade of Devers, especially after the fact also already traded away future Hall of Famers in Mookie Betts and Chris Sale over the past five years.

“Wake me up this is a nightmare,” one wrote.

“I hate the Red Sox they always do this to me,” another commented.

“There’s no coming back from this. Fire breslow, sell the team. Sox nation will never forget this. Disgusting,” a third added.

The Red Sox are in fourth place and will now look to go younger
