A superstitious shopkeeper is betting her luck—and future fortune—on a pint-sized bronze spirit.

Yesterday, July 30, a 44 year old woman visited Wat Phai Lom in Nakhon Pathom’s Mueang district, hoping for divine intervention from a revered supernatural statue known as “Kuman Sombat”. The temple was abuzz with believers, all hoping for lottery luck from the mysterious child-like figure.

Devotees turned up in droves, offering colourful drinks, sweets, toy cars, robots, and bicycles as tokens of gratitude and respect. Many believe the Kuman Sombat statue holds the power to bless worshippers with wealth, especially when it comes to striking it rich with the lottery.

The woman, identified as Suwaree, owns a spirit house shop and had long intended to make the pilgrimage.

“I’ve always wanted to come to pay respects to Kuman Sombat,” she said. During her visit, she performed an incense ritual, praying for fortune and asking for guidance on lucky numbers. The number that came to her: 353.

With the next lottery draw looming, Suwaree is pinning her hopes on that mystical three-digit figure. She pledged to return and hold a merit-making ceremony at the temple if she wins.

Kuman Sombat, a 15-inch bronze statue, was originally brought back from Suphan Buri by the late Abbot Luang Pho Phun. Measuring 15 inches high and 9 inches wide, the figure was named “Kuman Thong Sombat” by the abbot himself and is said to be the only statue of its kind associated with him.

The statue’s reputation has grown over the years, drawing in visitors from across the country who seek blessings for business success, financial prosperity, or simply a stroke of luck. Worshippers perform specific rituals, often guided by temple caretakers, to increase their chances of having their wishes granted, reported KhaoSod.

“I believe if you come with faith and a pure heart, Kuman Sombat will answer,” one devotee at the scene said.

Whether or not Suwaree becomes the next big lottery winner remains to be seen—but she’s certainly not alone in hoping the spirits are on her side.
