Ever since retiring in 2016, the Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end DeMarcus Ware has looked to help not only himself but others when it comes to fitness and health.
Ware weighed around 260 pounds and suffered 50-plus injuries during his 12-year career.
The 42-year-old has continued to work out, but has a healthier lifestyle after taking a beating from football players for over a decade.
“Retiring from the NFL has allowed me to have a healthier lifestyle. I get more rest and recovery time between workouts and my body doesn’t get beaten up and bruised every week,” Ware said in an interview with NIH MedicinePlus Magazine in 2021.
“I’ve also cut in half the number of calories I take in. Some people say that your life stops when you retire. For me, it has started!”
Ware’s diet consists of three healthy meals and healthy snacks.
The Denver Broncos Super Bowl 50 champion shared that he usually eats oatmeal with blueberries before a 45-minute morning workout.
Ware has a full breakfast that includes brown rice, eggs, chicken sausage, and a protein shake.
Lunch then consists of fish, broccoli, and whole-grain rice.
For dinner, Ware eats a lean meat, vegetables, and sweet potatoes.
The two-time NFL sack leader and nine-time Pro Bowler has one cheat day per week.
The father-of-three Ware recommends “giving your kids a positive experience with healthy foods” and has a tactic for young ones to eat healthy and exercise.
“If I were to tell my kids I don’t like how sweet potatoes taste, they won’t like sweet potatoes. But if instead I put a little bit of brown sugar and cinnamon on them and say it tastes like sweet potato pie, they’ll love it,” he said.
“Regarding fitness, my son and daughter didn’t enjoy exercise at first.
“But now they love to go out and do any kind of exercise because we do it together and we make it fun.

“It is a staple of our family routine.”
Ware’s gym habits include performing stretches and using a foam roller “to relieve tension in my muscles in the morning and night before I go to sleep.”
He sleeps and rests more than he did during his NFL days, going to bed at 10:30 pm ET instead of midnight and still getting up at 6:00 am ET.
Ware has his own gym in Texas, where he lives.
He opened the gym during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
