The actor, who rose to fame in Hollywood hits such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men, died on Tuesday morning at the age of 89.

His last role included playing a jailbird in the third season of the police drama, Dark Winds.

In the role, Redford is playing chess with George R. Martin as they sit in a jail cell together.

During the intense chess game, Redford urges Martin to make a move on the board.

“George, the whole world’s waiting. Make a move,” Redford’s character said.

Martin and Redford are being carefully watched by a guard who gives them game advice.

“Checkmate,” Martin said as he moved his red playing piece.

TRAGIC LOSS

“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah–the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Cindi Berger, Redford’s publicist, said in a statement to The U.S. Sun.

“He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”

The actor leaves behind his wife, German artist Sibylle Szaggars.
