Scattered t-storms today; Big heat likely this weekend

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Good morning KELOLAND! More scattered thunderstorms are ahead today, plus the biggest heat of the season so far is on the way for KELOLAND. Check out the latest details in our mid- morning weather video update!

Thunderstorms developed yesterday southwest of Mitchell and tracked toward Yankton. Large hail fell with that storm as it moved southeast. You can see the storm track on the map below.

Scattered severe weather occurred across many areas of the northern plains and upper Midwest as you can see on the radar loop.

The thunderstorms the past 5 days are falling in patches across the region, but we certainly see gaps in between. That’s true for the Sioux Falls area as of Tuesday morning. Notice how wet we are in the far northeast around Sisseton.

With the blend of sun and clouds, expect highs near 80 in Sioux Falls today with scattered rain chances this afternoon.

Here’s a look at Futurecast. You can see the scattered nature of the rain chance today, with a better chance of rain in the southwest this afternoon. If that rain tracks to the east, Sioux Falls will have a better chance of rain overnight. Once that disturbance departs the region, showers and thunderstorm chances will diminish on Wednesday. Thursday is looking warmer as heat and humidity return. Scattered t-storms are again possible East River late Thursday night into Friday as a major heatwave unfolds for the weekend. We are looking at temperatures well into the 90s, with possible 100s by Saturday in western and far southern SD.

The map below shows the anticipated heat index numbers this weekend. If this trend holds, heat advisories are likely. Make sure you plan ahead to manage the hot weather. Conditions on Sunday will begin to cool in western SD, a trend that will move east into Monday. It’s also worth noting that strong south winds will be in the forecast this weekend, so at least all that hot air will be moving around.

Here are the details of the forecast.
