Lawmakers in Florida have approved the state budget, opting to make expectations on a variety of products permanently.
This budget marks a change for Florida, as lawmakers have not opted for a disaster relief tax holiday or a tax holiday just for summer.
This will save people in the state money on a range of essential items, as well as some luxury ones.
The new budget takes effect July 1, meaning Floridians can start enjoying the savings in just a mater of hours.
The budget does provide room for a couple of tax holidays in the state, however.
A permanent back-to-school tax holiday will occur throughout August, saving people money specifically on those items.
This will include items such as clothing, footwear and backpacks up to $100.
Meanwhile, things like pens and pencils, notebooks and lunch boxes worth up to $50 will not be charged sales tax.
In this category, the highest tax exemption you can get is on things like personal computers and related accessories.
Florida gives you sales tax exemptions on these items that are worth up to $1,500.
This year’s budget also included a “Hunting, Fishing and Camping” sales tax holiday.
This will apply from September 8, 2025 through December 31, and included exemptions on related products, like tents and camping chairs.
For example, you will be able to save sales tax on tents worth up to $200, while chairs have a $50 cap.
TAX REBATE
In another US state, Alabama, lawmakers have approved an income tax rebate of $100 for most who file.
Florida items set for permanent sales tax exemption
- AA-cell, AAA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt, or 9-volt batteries
- Smoke detection devices
- Carbon monoxide alarms
- Fire extinguishers
- Portable generators
- Waterproof tarps and other flexible waterproof sheeting (1,000 square feet or less)
- Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
- Portable gas or diesel fuel cans (5 gallons or less)
- Life jackets
- Bicycle helmets
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
This will mean that when you file your taxes, you will be save $100 on your returns.
However, this decision is giving less money back to citizens than they would have gotten under a previous proposal.
Governor Kay Ivy initially suggested a $400 tax rebate as a way to distribute the state budget surplus.
Ivy said: “It’s only right, while still acknowledging we are recording revenues far exceeding normal and sustainable levels, we give a fair share of this money directly back to the people of Alabama.”
The new $100 proposal will reduce the cost from $1 billion to $275 million.
A whopping $2.8 billion spending package has been debated in Alabama, and the tax rebate funds would likely come out of that.
The payments have been approved, but still need to be voted on by the the Alabama legislature and signed into law before they can go into effect.
