Athleta announced that it will shut its location in Hoboken, New Jersey, later this month, after first opening in the fall of 2014, according to Hoboken Girl.

The store, which Gap owns, is popular for its women’s and girls’ activewear, outerwear, and accessories.

Athleta was started in 1998 and was acquired ten years later by Gap, Inc., which also owns Old Navy and Banana Republic.

Shoppers have until July 24 to get 30% off on all its merchandise.

The announcement of the store’s closure shocked social media users and left them wondering what will go in its place.

The closure of the Hoboken location comes just months after another Athleta closed in Morristown earlier this year.

“Omggg noooo !! That’s my store and the team are amazing, this is really sad,” one user commented under an Instagram post.

Another user commented: “What a shame to read the news- I would pick that over Abercrombie any day.”

Some shoppers blamed the “overpriced” items at the store while other blamed the high rent that businesses need to pay in the city.

“Morristown just recently closed,” one user commented.

“Lower your price. Way Way way overpriced items.”

One resident called the store’s closure another “Hoboken fail.”

“Another Hoboken fail,” the user commented.

“We need a shame bell for this town. Incredibly disappointing.”

US braces for ‘45,000 store closures’

Some 45,000 bricks-and-mortar stores could close in the next five years, experts have warned.

Several major retailers have announced store closures or gone out of business altogether in recent years.

In 2023, chains such as Foot Locker announced plans to close up to 400 outlets by 2026.

While, other well-known retailers like Tuesday Morning and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams filed for bankruptcy in 2023.

Bed Bath & Beyond has closed all of its brick-and-mortar stores and is now an online-only retailer.

The most affected retailers have been clothing, consumer electronics, sporting goods, hobby, book, music, and home furnishing stores since the start of 2019.

UBS has predicted the total number of retail stores will drop by 45k from 958k to 913k.

Despite that, the report says that certain stores should thrive while others decline.

It said retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, and Target, could be among the winners.

Two miles away, another Hoboken hotspot announced its closing after twelve years in business.

Orale Mexican Kitchen told Hoboken Girl that it would permanently shut its doors on July 1.

The kitchen became a “staple” in Hudson County when it opened its Jersey City location in 2013.

Five years later, the Mexican restaurant opened its location in Hoboken.

“Thank you so much for all the amazing years and memories, meals, and community,” the restaurant said in a statement.

“Our lease has come to an end, and it’s time to say goodbye – we have exciting new projects in the works, so stay tuned.”

The Jersey City and Morristown locations are still open for business.
