A large-scale rescue effort was reportedly launched and 16 fully-equipped ambulances were deployed.

Despite their rapid response, six students could not be saved and were pronounced dead at the scene, Gulf News reports.

The news outlet said that rescuers managed to treat three injured students on-site.

The remaining 21 were transported to local hospitals for further medical care, it added.

Thirteen students were taken to Agamy Specialised Hospital, eight to Amriya General Hospital, while three others received treatment on-site, Egypt Daily News reports.

Authorities in Alexandria ordered the immediate closure of Abu Talat Beach.

Red warning flags have been raised across the area, cautioning the public against entering the sea due to dangerous wave conditions and strong currents.

Khaled Abdel Ghaffa, Minister of Health and Population, said that all emergency treatment is being made available to the students.

An investigation is now underway, and officials are examining whether proper safety measures were in place.
