Sophie Cunningham receives devastating injury update after Indiana Fever star’s family left fuming at WNBA rival

SOPHIE Cunningham has received unfortunate news on her knee injury, which the Indiana Fever star suffered over the weekend.

The 28-year-old’s family was left furious following the guard’s brutal knee injury during the Fever‘s 99-93 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.

Cunningham collided with the Sun’s Bria Hartley while she was defending under the basket.

She was in pain and taken to the locker room with a leg issue.

Cunningham underwent an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury.

However, the Fever announced that Cunningham will miss the rest of the season due to a right injury.

Fortunately, the team did share that Cunningham is expected to make a full recovery.

Due to the injury, the Fever has signed guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract and released guard Kyra Lambert.

Cunningham remained upbeat since her injury incident.

However, her family has reacted furiously and accused the WNBA of not protecting its players.

Cunningham’s sister, Lindsey, wrote on X: “@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes.

“Pathetic.”

Sophie reposted the message on her X account.

The siblings’ mother even sent her own fierce comment on the situation.

In a now-deleted post, Paula Cunningam wrote, “Hartley is a disgruntled player having trouble everywhere she goes; she’s plain mean and plays out of control.”

The Fever will now be without two of their star players as Caitlin Clark has been out since July 15 with a groin injury.

The two-time All-Star is expected to return to the court before the season ends.

In 30 games and 13 starts, Cunningham averaged 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest.

She has been one of the most popular players in the WNBA after being involved in a heated game with the Sun back in June.

Cunningham was ejected from a June 17 game for a confrontation with Jacy Sheldon.

She came to the rescue of Clark for an earlier incident with Connecticut in the contest.
