Cunningham was defending under the basket at the time of the incident and was left wincing it pain.

She was taken to the locker room with a leg problem and she is due to undergo a scan to determine the extent of the injury.

Cunningham has remained upbeat since the incident – but her family have reacted angrily and accused the WNBA of not protecting its players.

Her sister Lindsey posted on X: “@WNBA maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic.”

Their mom Paula was equally as frustrated by the injury and took aim at Hartley.

She has since deleted the tweet, which read: “Hartley is a disgruntled player having trouble everywhere she goes; she’s plain mean and plays out of control.”

Cunningham, 28, has had some physical encounters this season – including against the Sun.

Last month she was elbowed in the head and the referees failed to give a foul.

Cunningham got up to continue the play and made minimal fuss.

But she spoke about the incident on social media afterwards.

One fan posted on X, “Sophie Cunningham takes an elbow to the head. No call.”

And the WNBA player quoted the tweet in her reply.

“They said I flopped. El oh el,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham was involved in a heated clash with the Sun earlier this year.

She was ejected from a game on June 17 for a confrontation with Jacy Sheldon.

And the WNBA later hit her with a fine.

But her popularity rose among fans as a result of the incident.

Supporters claim she came to the rescue of teammate Caitlin Clark, who was part of an earlier incident.
