South Dakota issues air quality alert to last through Aug. 3

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Department of Ag and Natural Resources (DANR) and Department of Health (DOH) have issued an air quality alert for areas of the state due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.

The alert states the smoke may cause low visibility and bring an increase of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution.

DOH advises that these levels may be a risk to public health, particularly for elderly citizens, young children, and individuals with respiratory problems. They note that all people should avoid excessive physical exertion and minimize outdoor activities when smoke is causing low visibility outdoors.

People are also encouraged to keep windows and doors closed to preserve air quality in-doors.

You can track the real time PM2.5 concentrations by visiting DANR’s website at https://denravweb.sd.gov/AirVision/default.aspx or EPA’s website at https://www.airnow.gov/.
