Southwest Airlines confirms new security rule for passengers starting September 25 – and it will soon be expanded

SOUTHWEST passengers will now need to follow even more security measures before boarding.

The airline announced that customers will need to follow new guidelines before being cleared to fly.

Starting September 25, Southwest will begin requiring passengers to remove lithium batteries from powered wheelchairs and scooters before boarding, according to Reuters.

The airline cited fire risks as the main reason the batteries will need to be removed.

Starting in January, the airline will implement size restrictions on lithium batteries.

“Lithium batteries have become one of the most common sources of smoke and fire incidents on aircraft,” Southwest said in a note to employees, according to Reuters.

“While these events are rare, quick access and visibility are critical to keeping everyone onboard safe.

“By taking proactive steps now, Southwest will be among the first U.S. carriers to adopt these higher standards.”

The new restrictions follow the Federal Aviation Administration’s report of serious incidents caused by lithium batteries in aircraft passenger compartments.

One of the incidents involved a passenger on American Airlines who was flying from Dallas to Madrid.

The unnamed passenger’s phone began overheating and emitting smoke.

The passenger was injured, and the aircraft’s floor sustained damage, resulting in a flight delay.

In July, a passenger flying from Chicago to Portland, Oregon, had their laptop overheat, which then began emitting smoke.

The laptop was put in a bag in a bathroom, but the flight was diverted to Wyoming due to the smoke.

In total, there have been 50 incidents involving lithium-ion battery smoke, fire, or heat, according to the FAA.

Other mishaps involved cargo planes carrying lithium batteries in bulk.

Southwest battery changes

  • As of September 25, Southwest will begin requiring passengers to remove lithium batteries from powered wheelchairs and scooters before boarding
  • As of January 11, Southwest will begin requiring lithium batteries to be 300 watt-hours or less

The FAA urged airlines to clearly inform passengers and crew members about the fire hazards posed by lithium batteries.

For crew members, the agency encouraged airlines to review firefighting procedures with their staff.

Southwest will begin requiring lithium batteries to be 300 watt-hours or less by January 11.

“This update is designed to prioritize safety without creating unnecessary barriers to travel,” the airline said.

Other lithium-ion battery items include power Banks, cell phone battery charging cases, and laptop batteries.

There are no current quantity limits for lithium-ion batteries per customer.
