SEVERAL Spectrum customers were left fuming after spotting suspicious charges labeled as “retry” or “rejected payment” fees.
As the consumers were hit with an extra $20 or more tacked on their bills, they urged others to avoid enrolling in a questionable billing program.

Spectrum, a major broadband connectivity company and cable provider in the US, provides internet, mobile, video, and voice services to millions of customers across 41 states.
The company is one of the largest residential cable providers and has promoted itself as the top provider for rural internet in the nation, known for its widespread coverage, competitive pricing, and no data caps.
While many consumers are pleased with their Spectrum services, others have aired their grievances about the company – especially when it comes to billing.
A number of customers have complained that Spectrum’s autopayment system rejects their payment for seemingly no reason, tacking on late fees of $20 or more.
While some of these may be due to system glitches or issues with a card or bank, many consumers feel the unexpected charges are unfair or that they were not sufficiently notified.
Several Spectrum users have shared their experiences on social media to warn others.
“I’m done with Spectrum and their shady billing practices. They’ve officially crossed the line,” one customer on Reddit fumed.
They explained that they had two payment methods on their Spectrum account, with both charged different amounts randomly.
One of the cards, which only Spectrum had access to, was suddenly being hit with charges and flagged for suspicious activity, with the customer blaming the telecommunications company.
“And here’s the kicker: they’re labeling payments I initiated as ‘retry’ payments, like I messed something up and they had to step in. Total lie. It’s a scammy way to tack on fees and shift the blame to my bank,” fumed the customer.
“This is theft, plain and simple. Whether it’s rogue employees or baked into their system, I don’t care anymore,” they said, noting that they would avidly monitor their account from now on and tell everyone they know to cancel autopay immediately.
The U.S. Sun reached out to Spectrum for comment but did not immediately hear back.
NETWORK NUISANCE
The Redditor isn’t the only one who has faced problems with Spectrum’s billing.
Another Reddit user detailed how they were hit with a $25 rejected payment fee when using auto-pay.
Spectrum at a glance
- Founded: 1993, as Charter Communications
- Services: Internet, TV/video, home phone, mobile
- Coverage: 41 US states
- Subscribers: More than 30 million internet customers nationwide
The customer said they had received an email saying their payment failed and were able to pay their bill within two hours.
When on the phone with a Spectrum representative, the user pointed out that on the company’s website in May 2025 and on their recent bill, it stated that a $5 fee was charged if a customer’s payment failed to go through.
The user also noted that, according to Spectrum’s policy, those on auto-pay are given three days to update their account with a valid method before the fee is applied.
“The representative did not seem too interested in knowing those facts about their policy or honoring,” said the customer, who was ultimately given a $25 courtesy credit to apply on the following month’s bill.
“Poor customer service in my opinion,” they wrote. “I wonder how many people are hit with this $25 fee when it should in fact be $5. If I can switch in the coming months I will.”
Yet another Redditor faced a similar issue when paying the Spectrum bill, complaining, “I’m sorry, a what fee?!”
The user shared a screenshot of their account, which showed a $95 charge for Spectrum internet as well as a $20 “rejected payment fee.”
“Clearly there was zero issue with the money being taken out of my account so wth is this ‘rejected payment fee’ bullsh**. Even if it autopayed on the 18th at midnight that’s exactly when I got paid so the money was always there.”
As complaints continue to mount online, many frustrated customers are warning others to keep a close eye on their statements or consider ditching Spectrum’s auto-pay altogether.
Spectrum isn’t the only company facing complaints about unusual charges.
A Walmart shopper, for example, woke up to $700 of random charges after using self-checkout.
Another Walmart shopper blasted the chain after a mystery $26 charge was added to their receipt – and it’s happened five other times.
