The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued an urgent alert for the northeast of Thailand, warning of torrential downpours and thunderstorms set to drench the entire nation.
Locals are urged to stay on high alert for flash floods and landslides, especially in those tricky hilly regions and low-lying areas. Farmers, take heed, it’s time to shield those crops from the impending onslaught.
The adverse weather conditions are due to a monsoon trough moving across the lower northern region and upper northeastern region, coupled with a strong southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.
Maritime conditions in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are also expected to be rough, with waves reaching 2 to 3 metres. In areas experiencing thunderstorms, waves could exceed 3 metres.
Meanwhile, in the lower Andaman Sea and the lower Gulf of Thailand, wave heights are anticipated to be between 1 and 2 metres, with potential increases in areas with thunderstorms. Mariners are advised to exercise caution when navigating these waters and to avoid sailing in thunderstorm-affected areas. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are advised to remain ashore until June 13.
In addition, Tropical Storm Vongfong, located in the upper South China Sea, is predicted to move across Hainan Island into southern China between June 13 and June 14. Travellers to these areas should check weather conditions before departing, although the storm is not expected to affect Thailand.
