Starbucks confirms it will shut location next month – just days after announcing the closure of all ‘mobile only’ spots

STARBUCKS has confirmed it will shut down a location next month in a major US state, just days after announcing a massive closure wave.

The coffeehouse giant plans to shut nearly 100 locations by the end of next year.

A popular Starbucks location in Denver, Colorado, has been scheduled for closure.

The restaurant is located at 575 Lincoln Street in the downtown area of the city.

Customers only have until August 29 before the location closes, in less than a month.

A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed that employees will be given a chance to transfer to another location.

They said: “As part of Starbucks standard course of business, we continually evaluate our business to ensure a healthy store portfolio.

“After careful consideration, we’ve determined it is best to close the store at 575 Lincoln Street.

“Our last day at this location will be August 29.

“All Starbucks partners working at that store will have the opportunity to transfer to one of our nearby locations.

“We look forward to serving our customers at our nearby locations in Denver.”

MASSIVE CLOSURE WAVE

Starbucks’ CEO Brian Niccol recently announced that Starbucks would begin phasing out its mobile-order-only locations.

The CEO criticized the format for being “overly transactional”, and confirmed that all of the 80 to 90 locations would be gone by the end of 2026.

He said: “As part of this work [Back to Starbucks], we plan to sunset our mobile order and pickup only concept in fiscal 2026.

“We found this format to be overly transactional and lacking the warmth and human connection that defines our brand.”

“We have a strong digital offering and believe that we can deliver the same level of convenience to our community coffeehouses with a superior mobile order and pay experience.

“Together, we expect these changes to our operating model and our coffeehouse portfolio strategy will improve and transform the foundations of our North American business so that we are establishing that moment of connection between a barista and their customer, bringing back warm and welcoming coffeehouses.”

Restaurant closures in 2025

Denny’s – Denny’s has confirmed that up to 150 locations are set to close in the US by the end of the year as many of them are no longer profitable.

Red Lobster – The chain has said that it plans to close over 100 stores across the country this year as new CEO Damola Adamolekun takes over.

TGI Friday’s – TGI Friday’s is still being forced to shutter locations thanks to a bankruptcy filing, including 30 in April alone.

Applebee’s – This chain is projecting a loss of 20 to 35 Applebee’s spots in 2025 but is teaming up with IHOP to introduce dual-branded locations with a curated menu of the two’s best items.

Noodles & Company – This emporium is set to close between 17 and 21 locations in 2025 following a difficult 2024.

A Starbucks spokesperson also confirmed to The US Sun in an email that some of the mobile-order-only spots will be turned into coffeehouses with seating.

It comes as part of Niccol’s sweeping changes to bring the customer experience back to the forefront of the company ethos.

The CEO’S Back to Starbucks initiative aims to give the coffeehouses a neighborhood cafe-like feeling of community.

As part of this, Starbucks is continuing to remodel its coffeehouses, investing roughly $150,000 per location.

Niccol added: “Uplifts are intended to quickly replace thousands of seats we removed and introduce greater texture, warmth, and layered design.

“We’ve also begun work on the Coffeehouse of the Future — we have a new standalone prototype that will open in fiscal 2026 that has 32 seats, a drive-thru, and a roughly 30% lower cost to build.

“A smaller format version, with approximately 10 seats, is under construction in New York City and will open in the next five months.”

“We believe this prototype will deliver an exceptional customer experience.”

By the end of 2026, at least 1,000 locations will be remodeled to align with the Back to Starbucks plans.
