Storm Center PM Update: Active Weather into Friday; Quiet Weekend

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Outside of a few storms that ran along the Gregory/Charles Mix County line and a few storms in Lake and Kingsbury Counties, much of the day has been rather quiet so far. That is expected to change as we head later into the day and into the night.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to fire up in western and central KELOLAND later in the evening and push eastward as we head into the night. Some of these may become strong to severe, with damaging gusts, large hail, and a low-end isolated tornado risk all being possible, especially in central and northern KELOLAND.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 10 pm CDT/9 pm MDT Wednesday night. Please stay weather aware.

An Enhanced Risk for severe weather is in place for central South Dakota…extending as far east as De Smet and as far west as the Wall area. A Slight Risk surrounds that…covering much of the rest of South Dakota. A Marginal Risk fills in some of the gaps in extreme eastern, northwestern, and southwestern KELOLAND. Please stay weather aware as we head into the night. Have your StormTracker App ready to go as well as a NOAA weather radio.

The trend continues as we head into the day on Thursday and into Friday. While we do get a small break at first, we’ll have another chance to see showers and thunderstorms develop as we head into the second half of the day and into the night. Showers and storms spill into Friday, as we close the work week on a rather unsettled and at times soggy note.

A Marginal Risk for severe weather covers nearly the entirety of KELOLAND on Thursday, with a Slight Risk near and south of the Nebraska border in south-central South Dakota. Wind and hail are the main concerns with a low-end isolated tornado risk near and south of the SD/NE border. We’ll also watch the rain gauge during this time, as there is an excessive rain risk in place for the Thursday and Thursday night time frame.

Fortunately, we’ll get a break as we head toward the weekend. While the rain is always a welcome sight from a farming and drought perspective, we need some time for the ground to soak it all in and get ready for the next round.

That weekend outlook is looking rather nice with temperatures in the 80s on Saturday and 80s/90s if you’re East River vs West River. We’ll even start the new work week on a quiet note for most of us before things start to become unsettled once more. We do have a chance for showers and storms by the middle of next week that we’ll be watching.

Here’s a look at your extended forecast:
