Sturgis police arrest 17 locals in 24 hours

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Sturgis Police Department expands each year for patrol at the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

The city hires officers from other departments including inside and outside of South Dakota.

From 6 a.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday, the expanded force made 44 traffic arrests and 36 non-traffic arrests. Eight parking citations were issued.

The city department tracks how many of those charged are residents within three hours of Sturgis and designates those as locals. Seventeen locals were charged.

Overall, arrests and charges were down from the same time period in 2024. Most of the non traffics arrests and citations this year so far were for disorderly conduct, 6, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia or drugs,7, felony drug possession, 9, resting arrest/obstructing an officer, 4.

There were 44 traffic arrests and 36 non traffic arrests.

Police cited 22 people for illegal parking, seven for driving under suspension/revocation and four for driving while intoxicated and stop sign/stop light violation, as well as other citations.
