Susanna Reid defends Kate Middleton over blonde hair trolls & reveals she went lighter to help with ageing

SUSANNA Reid has defended Kate, the Princess of Wales, after the royal divided opinion with her newly-lightened hair.

Kate first debuted her blonder locks as she joined husband Prince William and their children at a Balmoral church service late last month.

But it was her outing to the Natural History Museum in London last week that served as the official unveiling of her new ‘do.

Despite the fact that Kate appeared delighted with her new ‘bronde’ locks, social media trolls were out in force – with many making cruel comments saying that it doesn’t suit her.

Princess Diana’s former hairdresser Sam McKnight was among those defending Kate, and Good Morning Britain’s Susanna is the latest to speak out in support of the princess.

The 54-year-old presenter has also recently undergone something of a colour makeover herself, and said during an appearance on Lorraine on Monday that she did so because lighter shades are more “flattering” on “ageing skin” like hers.

As she weighed in on Kate’s new ‘do, Susanna said: “The Princess Of Wales still has very, very long, thick hair and I noticed a lot of the commentary is that maybe it’s time to go a little bit shorter.

“But again, it’s her distinctive look and the change that she’s made is to go blonder.”

Host Lorraine Kelly agreed that Kate looks “absolutely beautiful”, and hit back at those who criticised the royal for perhaps adding to her tresses with some clip in extensions, as she raged “so what?”

Susanna then went on to say that when she cut her hair into a bob back in 2023, she was told by music legend Cher that she should grow her hair long again.

She then used extensions to do so, as she explained: “After Cher told me I had to go long, I originally went to hair pieces.

“They give your hair the most amazing thick texture. I turned back time and went long!”

Susanna also insisted that it was just chance that the debut of her lightened locks happened in the same week as Kate’s, and she hadn’t been persuaded to copy the royal.

“Actually it’s because I’ve started to go a bit lighter as I’ve grown a few years older,” she explained.

“I find having lighter pieces in my hair is a bit softer on ageing skin.”

As Lorraine showed how much darker Susanna’s hair was when she started at ITV, she said she doesn’t find the “full chestnut” hue as flattering now that she’s older.

“I just find that that shade now on my skin isn’t flattering – blonder is a little bit kinder,” she smiled.

Susanna’s public defence of Kate comes after renowned stylist Sam McKnight took to his Instagram page to admit he was “disgusted” by some of the awful comments that had been made about the princess.

Kate Middleton’s ‘Youthful’ Eyebrow Trick

AMY Bates, make-up artist and founder of thebeautyrebellion.co.uk shares how Kate Middleton’s beauty tricks…

Many people experience eyebrow thinning as they get older – but Kate’s have done the opposite.

The Princess opts for a fuller look, which gives her a more youthful appearance.

Amy Bates, hair stylist, make-up artist and founder of thebeautyrebellion.co.uk, says: “If you have lines and wrinkles under the eye, the right brows can draw attention away from that area and make it less noticeable.

“In her younger years, Kate’s brows were thin and heavily plucked but now they are growing back thicker.

“I imagine a specialist has helped her using a technique such as HD Brows, where the natural brows are tinted and shaped.”

And she also appears to have ditched harsher eyeliner too.

Amy says: “Kate is still wearing eyeliner but it is much softer and not too dark. She now prefers smoky brown and bronze hues, which are more flattering.

“Thick lines can make people look older and Kate understands this.”

“A woman’s hair is very personal to her,” he wrote.

“It’s armour, defence, confidence and so much more.

“I cannot believe how evil and lacking in any kind of empathy are the comments, the majority made apparently by other women, attacking a vulnerable other young woman, who has no choice, by dint of who she married and the role she took on, to bravely face the public.

“I’m sure she would rather be away from the public arena.

“She has brilliantly and quietly, unselfishly represented our country, the soft power we still have as a nation.”

Sam also highlighted Kate’s journey after her cancer diagnosis – which she bravely shared with the public last year – as he concluded: “Cancer affects individuals differently, but is life changing for everyone.

“So FFS leave her alone. Shame on you.”
