SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Authorities have identified the man who was shot by police Monday night as 23-year-old Deondre Black Hawk.
He was wanted on three felony warrants involving drugs and a burglary. Police said he was also believed to be a suspect in a Sunday shooting.
Officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant in a neighborhood near 10th Street and South Garfield Avenue. When police approached Deondre Black Hawk, Attorney General Marty Jackley says Black Hawk ran from them while firing a gun.
“He had fired about a half dozen times at law enforcement,” Jackley said. “We have recovered shell casings on the scene.”
Black Hawk was shot multiple times and was taken to the hospital. No officers were injured.
“A common concern and theme that we have in these officer-involved shootings is oftentimes these individuals are either on probation, which is this instance, or parole,” Jackley said. “That concerns me as attorney general that there needs to be more focus on probation and parole and accountability.”
In addition to the warrant that brought officers to the west-central Sioux Falls neighborhood, police said Black Hawk was a suspect in a Sunday shooting that left a woman in critical condition.
“Officers arriving on scene found a 19-year-old female resident with a gunshot wound to her head and then provided medical aid while on scene,” Sioux Falls Police Department spokesperson Aaron Benson said.
Both shootings are under investigation. This is the state’s fifth officer-involved shooting this year.
At this time, Black Hawk remains in the hospital.
