Tennessee found themselves trailing 13-12, late in the third quarter, when the incident happened.
Receiver Elic Ayomanor took a spectacular acrobatic catch, seemingly converting a first down.
The referees ruled that the 22-year-old failed to stay inbounds, with neither foot staying in play.
However, he did ground his elbow inside the sideline, meaning he should have been awarded a catch.
The NFL rules state that a catch should be given for getting two feet inbounds or any non-hand body part.
Despite this, the 20-plus-yard card catch was deemed incomplete by referees.
When asked about the incident after the game, Callahan agreed with the incorrect referee call.
The coach said, “You’ve got to get a foot in bounds, too.
“We didn’t have a clean look at whether his foot was down as well.
“An elbow doesn’t equal two feet. So his foot would’ve had to come down, too.
“We didn’t have a clean look, so the call from upstairs was that it wasn’t worth challenging.”
However, if he had challenged the referees, the call would have been overturned, and the Titans would have received a first down.
As it was, the Titans went on to lose the game, with the Broncos scoring the only touchdown in the fourth quarter to extend their lead.
The following day, Callahan admitted his mistake in a press conference.
He said, “My interpretation of the rule was wrong.
