Thailand braces for heavy rain and flash floodsLegacy

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its third warning regarding a tropical depression, predicting heavy rainfall in Bangkok and two other regions, with an 80% chance of precipitation. Additionally, 45 provinces are on alert for potential flash floods and forest runoff tomorrow, September 8.

Over the next 24 hours, certain areas in Thailand will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in the eastern region. Residents in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Trat, Ranong, and Phang Nga are advised to exercise caution due to the risk of flash floods and forest runoff, especially in mountainous areas and lowlands.

This situation results from a monsoon trough affecting the lower northern, central, and lower northeastern regions, combined with a moderate southwesterly monsoon over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

The TMD’s first announcement about the tropical depression indicated that the storm is expected to make landfall in southern China between September 8 and September 9. In the northern Andaman Sea, moderate winds are expected, with waves reaching approximately 2 metres, and areas with thunderstorms experiencing waves exceeding 2 metres.

In contrast, the lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will see waves between 1 and 2 metres, with higher waves during thunderstorms. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in stormy areas.

The tropical depression in the upper South China Sea is expected to move northwestward at 10 kilometres per hour and make landfall in southern China between September 8 and September  9. This storm will not directly affect Thailand’s weather, although the southwesterly monsoon covering Thailand will intensify. Travellers to the affected areas should check the weather conditions before their journey.
