
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has sounded an urgent warning for a whopping 52 provinces, as a fierce south-westerly monsoon barrels its way across the Andaman Sea, sweeping into Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. Forecasters are predicting wild thunderstorms, with churning seas set to whip up waves topping 2metres.
Holidaymakers and locals alike are being urged to take extra care as Mother Nature gets ready to unleash her fury.
Today, June 19, the TMD predicts thunderstorms in northern, upper northeastern, and southwestern regions. The Andaman Sea is experiencing moderate winds with waves between 1 and 2 metres, increasing beyond 2 metres during thunderstorms. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and avoid areas of thunderstorms.
The forecast for today, 6am to tomorrow, 6am, indicates that northern Thailand will see thunderstorms covering 60% of the area, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, and Phetchabun provinces. Temperatures range from 23 to 26°C, with highs reaching 32 to 35°C. The southwest winds are expected to be between 5 and 15 kilometres per hour.
In the northeastern region, thunderstorms will cover 40% of the area, mainly affecting Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will vary from 23 to 27°C, with highs of 34 to 37°C. Winds will range from 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Central Thailand will experience thunderstorms in 30% of the area, focusing on Lop Buri, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon. The lowest temperatures will be 23 to 27°C, while the highest will be 35 to 37°C, with southwest winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
In the eastern region, thunderstorms are expected in 40% of the area, particularly in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will range from 25 to 28°C, with highs of 32 to 35°C. Winds are projected to be 15 to 30 kilometres per hour, with sea waves around 1 metre, increasing beyond 2 metres in thunderstorms.

The southern region (eastern coast) will have thunderstorms in 40% of the area, notably in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C, with highs of 34 to 36°C.
Southwest winds will be 15 to 30 kilometres per hour, and sea waves around 1 metre, increasing beyond 2 metres in thunderstorms.
The southern region (western coast) will see thunderstorms in 60% of the area, mostly in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27°C, with highs of 32 to 34°C.
From Ranong upwards, southwest winds will be 15 to 35 kilometres per hour, with sea waves between 1 and 2 metres, increasing beyond 2 metres in thunderstorms. From Phang Nga downwards, winds will be 15 to 30 kilometres per hour, with sea waves around 1 metre, increasing beyond 2 metres in thunderstorms.
Bangkok and its vicinity will experience thunderstorms in 40% of the area, mainly in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will range from 26 to 28°C, with highs of 34 to 36°C. Southwest winds are expected to be 10 to 20 kilometres per hour, reported KhaoSod.
