Tributes paid to MLB All-Star after his death aged 69 as team makes emotional announcement

TRIBUTES have poured in for a former Major League Baseball star who died at age 69.

The sad death was announced Monday by the Toronto Blue Jays.

He spent most of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays[/caption]

Jim Clancy played for the franchise from 1977 to 1988.

He was an All-Star in 1982 and spent the majority of his years with the team.

Clancy also played for the Houston Astros from 1989 to 1991.

The pitcher also had a short spell with the Atlanta Braves before retiring in the spring of 1992.

His death was confirmed by the Blue Jays on Monday.

No cause of death was provided by the baseball team in their statement.

It read, “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Blue Jays great, Jim Clancy.

“Clancy spent 12 of his 15 Major League seasons with Toronto – including an All-Star appearance in 1982 – and ranks second in franchise history in starts, innings pitched, and complete games.

“His impact on our organization will be remembered forever.

“Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”


Tributes then poured in for the former Blue Jays pitcher from the baseball world.

One read, “Our Blue Jays family is mourning the death of our beloved teammate big Jim Clancy.

“He was one of the anchors of our great pitching staff, and was a true warrior on the mound and a workhorse.

“We had a chance to win every time he took the mound because he kept us in it.”

While another said, “In some ways Jim Clancy was the Robin to Dave Stieb’s Batman during the Blue Jays rise to credibility during the 1980s.

“He was an absolute workhorse and a fearless competitor that I remember watching as a kid.

“A player who shone in moments where he could challenge for top of the rotation status by always keeping his team in close games.”

One more tribute read, “Probably the most underrated Blue Jays starting pitcher of all time.

“Unsung workhorse in the 1980s including 1985 & 1987.”

Clancy compiled a 140-167 record in his career with a 4.23 ETA and had 1,422 strikeouts.
