Troy Aikman sends clear message over Dallas Cowboys contract standoff with Micah Parsons and unpredictable Jerry Jones

TROY Aikman sent a strong message over the Dallas Cowboys’ contract dispute with star pass rusher Micah Parsons and owner Jerry Jones.

The Cowboys legend made his stance clear during the Monday Night Football preseason game between the Washington Commanders and Cincinnati Bengals on ESPN.

Parsons has continued to seek a long-term contract after he requested a trade last month amid a deal standoff with the Cowboys.

The 26-year-old’s rookie contract expires after he plays under his $21.3 million fifth-year option this season.

While Dallas’ longtime owner Jones has seemingly remained firm in his contract stance with the defensive end, Aikman thinks Parsons has “leverage” in negotiations.

“His leverage is that they can’t win without him,” the ESPN broadcaster said during Monday night’s preseason game.

“I do think the Cowboys are gonna be better than what a lot of people project.”

It’s worth noting that Vegas sportsbooks have set the Cowboys’ win total to 7.5.

However, Aikman doesn’t believe the Cowboys will be competitive without Parsons leading the charge.

“I like what [head coach] Brian Schottenheimer has shown in training camp and going into the year and they’ve got some things that I like about the team in general,” the 58-year-old said.

“But without Micah Parsons, I just don’t think they’re gonna be able to slow anybody down.”

Aikman then added that he expects the Cowboys to agree to a deal with Parsons, but then said, “I don’t think anybody knows what Jerry [Jones] is ever gonna do.”

With several weeks until the start of the regular season, Jones was asked if there is a deadline on negotiations.

“No, not at all. You don’t have deadlines when you’re playing under a contract,” the 82-year-old told ESPN.

Jones also claimed that he has no intention of honoring Parsons’ trade request.

Parsons is looking for a new deal following massive paydays for fellow pass rushing stars T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett.

The pair received at least an average of $40 million per year in their respective deals.

Aikman also believes that Parsons’ price will only go upthe longer the Cowboys take to sign a deal with him.

Parsons revealed in his social media statement, which include his trade request, that the team hasn’t spoken with his agent, David Mulugheta, once about a contract.

Jones has previously thrown cold water on Parsons’ trade rquest and told fans not to “lose any sleep” over the conflict.

The Cowboys have just two weeks until its season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 4.
