Trump state visit LIVE: President ushers in historic trip with £31BN UK tech deal – as Keir hopes to ease tariff blow

TRUMP kicked off his two-day state visit by announcing a “tech prosperity deal” with Britain that is worth billions.

American tech giants promised to invest £31 billion, and praised Britain’s “goldilocks position” in the AI industry.

The Prime Minister – who enjoys a friendly relationship with President Trump despite their differences – hopes this will improve collaboration on research for space exploration and defence.

It is hoped the deal will create thousands of jobs as companies like Google and Open AI promise to create more computing power.

The US President and First Lady Melania were welcomed by a guard of honour as they landed in the UK for their second state visit.

Trump, 79, said he most looked forward to spending time with “elegant gentleman” Charles. He also raised hopes he could “refine” the UK-US trade deal during his 48 hours here.

The US President is set to enjoy a royal flypast, a carriage ride with Princess Kate and a grand state banquet amongst other meetings during his three-day tour.

Speaking at the White House before departing, Mr Trump added how it is “the first time it has ever happened where somebody was honoured twice” with a state visit.

The US president also praised Sir Keir Starmer ahead of the visit, saying he represents the UK “so well”.

Typically, US presidents in their second term – like Mr Trump – are not offered full state visits, but rather tea or lunch with the monarch, as was the case with George W Bush and Barack Obama.

However, the 79-year-old is bucking the trend and will make his second full state visit starting today, which will last until Friday, September 18.

It follows his first in June 2019, where he met the late Queen Elizabeth II and stayed at Winfield House.
