PARKER, S.D. (KELO) — Construction efforts continue on the soon-to-be Turner County Courthouse.
“We’ll continue on steel here for the next couple of weeks,” Journey Construction superintendent Ryan Preheim said. “After that, it’s really getting the building enclosed, the windows and the roof system in. Try to get everything enclosed before wintertime approaches.”
Construction on the new $19 million courthouse started in June. Journey Construction Group is leading the project, and so far, county commissioners say it’s pacing on schedule.
“This interior steel is going in now, and one of the next big steps is to pour the concrete floors,” Chair of the Turner County Commission Jared Hybertson said.
The original courthouse was demolished in February after several structural issues were found. Leaking roofs and sinking trusses were a couple of problems seen around the more than 120-year-old original building.
“It was tough to see it go, but this new building will have a lot more accessibility which was a big deal. Workflow was well thought out in this new design,” Hybertson said. “Courthouse and courtroom security was a big deal to us and a lot of new technologies and updates as well.”
As long as construction keeps moving along like usual, the courthouse could be finished by next fall.
“It’s going to be a beautiful building when it’s all said and done. It’s going to serve the public for a long time to come,” Hybertson said. “It’s also going to give us room to grow in the future as Turner County grows.”
