UPDATE: Change of venue granted in Hoek case

UPDATED 2:59 p.m.

FLANDREAU, S.D. (KELO) – The man accused of killing Moody County Chief Deputy Ken Prorok over a year ago will go on trial in a different county, a judge decided Friday.

KELOLAND’s Tom Hanson is in the courtroom Friday. Third Judicial Circuit Judge Gregory Stoltenburg is still deciding which county the trial will move to.

The state prosecutors have asked the trial to be held in Lawrence, Meade, Pennington or Hughes Counties.

A trial date of September 2026 has been set.

Prorok was killed during a high-speed chase near the I-29 and Colman exit.

42-year-old Joseph Hoek is accused of swerving and intentionally running down Prorok on the highway.

This is a developing story. KELOLAND News will have more coverage on-air and online.
