US Open star Iga Swiatek in tense exchange with reporter and slams ‘why would you ask that?’ after shock exit

IGA Swiatek got into a strange altercation with a reporter during a press conference.

The Polish Swiatek was knocked out of the US Open by American Amanda Anisimova in two sets.

Earlier in the tournament, Swiatek got into an exchange with a reporter after they asked her if she would ever wear beads in her hair.

After losing to Anisimova, Swiatek was asked a more serious question, but still raged towards the reporter.

The reporter asked a simple question about how much tennis Swiatek had played and how her body was feeling.

“It’s been a lot of tennis the last few weeks: Wimbledon, the American tournaments leading up to this, and now this,” they asked.

“How tired are you at the moment?”

Swiatek fired back a short response to the question.

“Well, I don’t know,” she said.

“It’s not like my matches were exhausting here.”

The reporter then asked if Swiatek might feel like she needs a mental health break, which many sports stars have tried recently.

Swiatek didn’t appreciate the question at all, and appeared offended it would ever be asked.

“Why would you say that?” she said.

“I just wondered. It’s just a lot in a row,” the reporter replied.

“Do you look forward to a break?”

Swiatek then flipped the questions back on the reporter in her anger.

“Well, talk to people responsible for the schedule,” she said.

“Do you need mental break? You look like you need mental break.”

The reporter, seemingly unphased, agreed that they needed a break, but that they have “got to get to the end of the tournament.”

It is unclear why Swiatek took offense to the question about taking a mental health break.

Anisamova, her opponent on Wednesday night, walked away from tennis in May 2023 before returning in January of 2024.

She has found success since returning, going to the finals at Wimbledon and now making the semifinals at the US Open.
