Vague ‘threat from Iran-linked would-be attackers’ sparks increased security at ‘critical’ NYC locations ahead of 9/11

SECURITY is ramping up in New York City ahead of a jam-packed fall after cops allegedly received a vague terror threat.

The New York City Police Department is putting extra police around the metropolis as the city honors the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

The boosted presence comes after the NYPD received threats targeting the city’s “critical infrastructure,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Tisch said police are monitoring threats to bridges and tunnels connecting Queens and Manhattan.

However, she warned that it’s common for threats to increase around this time of year due to the 9/11 anniversary, the UN General Assembly, and Jewish High holidays.

“As always, we take all threats seriously, and we are working with our federal partners through our Joint Terrorism Task Force, as we investigate,” Tisch said.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are surging resources, and you can expect to see an increased police presence at critical infrastructure locations.”

The New York Post reported that the links between the two boroughs were mentioned in a loose plan for a “group” of unidentified criminals who may have ties to Iran.

Investigators with the NYPD and the FBI were made aware of the vague threat from would-be attackers, sources told the Post.

The outlet reported there were no details about the timing or methods of the threat.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the threat was linked to a specific country or terror group.

Police sources said the threats are unsubstantiated and vague, ABC affiliate WABC reported.

The NYPD refused to comment further when approached by The U.S. Sun.

Police were also sent to sensitive locations in New York City after the recent Israeli strike in Qatar targeting Hamas leaders.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we’re deploying additional resources to religious, cultural, and diplomatic sites across NYC and coordinating with our federal partners,” NYPD said on X on Tuesday.

“We’ll continue to monitor for any potential impact to NYC.”

Statement from NYC Mayor Eric Adams

New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued the following statement on Tuesday evening:

New Yorkers, during your evening commute — especially across bridges and through tunnels — you may notice an increased police presence. As we do every year around this time, we’re closely monitoring for any potential threats to NYC infrastructure.

The NYPD, in coordination with federal partners, is taking all threats seriously and has enhanced security at key locations. You can be confident that New York City remains safe and well protected.

The heightened security comes as New York City has faced several terrifying situations this summer.

SCARY SCENES IN NEW YORK CITY

In July, gunman Shane Tamura stormed into a Manhattan skyscraper and killed four people in the city’s deadliest shooting in the last 25 years.

The shooter attempted to target NFL executives in the attack at the office building, which housed the NFL headquarters, but ended up on the wrong floor, where he fatally shot one more person before turning the gun on himself.

The NYPD reportedly referenced the mass shooting in a bulletin preparing for the 80th UNGA session, which started on Tuesday.

“While the incident was not related to the UN, it underscores the vulnerability of high-profile buildings, especially those linked to global institutions to a wide range of threats from grievance collectors,” said the bulletin, obtained by ABC News.

Timeline of NYC shooting

A gunman stormed 345 Park Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan, on Monday night killing four before turning the gun on himself.

Cops are now investigating why the suspect Shane Tamura carried out the brutal attack and have released a preliminary timeline and are tracing back through his movements.

July 27 – Tamura drives through Nebraska and Iowa. He also doesn’t show up for work as a security guard at a Las Vegas casino

July 28, 6.28pm – Reports of the shooting are first made to NYPD. Tamura had moments earlier double parked his car and walked across a plaza into 345 Park Avenue

7.52pm – NYC Police Commissioner Tisch posted on X: “the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.”

Just this week, an elderly couple in Queens was found murdered in their home after a sex offender allegedly tortured and killed them.

Tisch issued a warning on Tuesday for New Yorkers to keep an eye out for suspect Jamel McGriff, who still hasn’t been caught as of Wednesday afternoon.

McGriff allegedly tricked the couple into letting him into his home before stabbing them to death, police said.

Last month, three people were killed in a mass shooting at a bar in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Despite the violent attacks, murders and gun violence have dropped drastically as a whole in the first half of 2025, according to data reported by the Manhattan District Attorney.
