On the social media platform Reddit, one shopper revealed a shocking price rise at Walmart.
The retailer’s Fresh Shrimp with Sauce had increased from $4.98 to $9.99, a rise of 100.6%.
Instead of paying $0.83 for one ounce, Walmart shoppers are now paying $1.67.
The caption of the post said: “This is insane.”
In the comments, many expressed their worry at the rise, and how it will effect the coming months.
A scared shopper noted: “It’s the start of shrimp season, and they’ve doubled it. Doesn’t send a good message of the upcoming season.
But not many were shocked that it had happened, blaming it on President Donald Trump‘s tariff policy.
One person wrote: “All together now: Who pays the tariffs? We pay the tariffs.
“Tariffs are taxes on Americans and will cause inflation that will make you beg for the Biden years.”
Another said: “But… Trump promised that grocery prices would go down as soon as he was elected.”
And a third chimed in: “Thanks Donald.
“People don’t realize how long the supply change takes.
“Even if he canceled the tariffs the day right after he made them, there would be impact in prices way down the line.
“We are going to be seeing this more and more in the coming days-weeks.”
What items will be affected by the tariffs?
AMERICANS should prepare to see significant prices changes on everything from avocados to cars under President Donald Trump’s new global tariffs.
Here is a list of some of the everyday products that could see a massive price tag surge.
- Coffee
- Tea
- Bananas
- Foreign-made cars
- Sneakers
- Furniture and other home goods
- Pharmaceuticals
- Video games
- Clothing
- Toys
- Washers and dryers
- Avocados
- Housing materials
There were also some who suggested that it could be due to seasonal pricing “Not to play devils advocate- but could this be out of season pricing?
“For example, in Louisiana, the spring/brown shrimp season is generally May to July, and the fall/white shrimp season is mid-August to mid-December. So the prices change accordingly.”
PREVIOUS PRICE RISES
This is not the first time Walmart customers have been hit with price rises.
The price of a T-Rex toy went up from $20 to $55 between April 19 to May 21.
This is an increase of 175% across just over a month, and shoppers were left freaking out about it.
One person wrote: “This is actually pretty terrifying. I don’t care about toys of course but jfc I can’t imagine what the price of food and necessities are going to be like soon, especially with most of us only making $14 and already struggling like hell.”
Meanwhile, another added: “What scares me is that Walmart is truly paying more for the products- I am watching our costs rise and products going up to cover us while its kicking everyone’s a**…consumers & companies.
“This will kill all businesses, big and small.”
The CEO of Walmart, John Rainey, previously warned that consumers would likely see higher prices this year.
He said: “We’re wired for everyday low prices, but the magnitude of these increases is more than any retailer can absorb.
“It’s more than any supplier can absorb.
“And so I’m concerned that consumer is going to start seeing higher prices.
“You’ll begin to see that, likely towards the tail end of this month, and then certainly much more in June.”
