Medical staff from Spartans loaded the 23-year-old onto a stretcher and then a cart that took him to a waiting ambulance off the field.
According to the Detroit Free Press, MSU staff cut his jersey off before he was placed on a backboard and loaded into the ambulance.
Matthews was rushed to LA General Hospital – a Level 1 trauma center – the highest for these types of injuries – according to Fox’s sideline reporter, Alexa Landestoy.
He did give a thumbs-up to the crowd while he was strapped to the backboard.
A spokesperson for Michigan State told the Free Press that Matthews’ motor skills were intact.
Many of Matthews’ teammates took part in a group prayer before play resumed.
But it still remains unclear what caused the injury during the scrimmage.
“It was something of a non-descript play,’ FOX commentator Jason Benetti said.
“Pretty immediately, it was clear that Wayne Matthews was going to need help off the field.
“And we’re thinking of everybody down there right now. Wayne Matthews, centrally.”
USC led 17-10 at the time of Matthew’s injury and added another score one play later.
Action on the field was delayed by 17 minutes and ended with USC winning 45-31.
