WeightWatchers claws it way back after major bankruptcy threatened to shut down entire business

WeightWatchers has clawed its way back following a bankruptcy that threatened to scupper the entire business.

The company has announced the “successful completion” of a major reorganisation process.

It comes after WeightWatchers filed for bankruptcy in the US in May, which many media reports linked to the soaring popularity of weight loss jabs.

The company plans to expand its weight health model to support women through perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause.

Dr. Kim Boyd will also be appointed as Chief Medical Officer.

Tara Comonte, Chief Executive Officer of WeightWatchers, said: “With renewed financial strength, an expanded leadership team, and the addition of Dr. Kim Boyd to lead clinical strategy and program innovation, we’re accelerating our transformation.

“From broadening our reach into women’s health to strengthening our holistic care model, we’re bringing together medical expertise, behavioral science, and trusted community support to meet the evolving needs of our members.

“In a landscape dominated by noise, quick fixes, and conflicting advice, WeightWatchers continues to lead as the most trusted, science-backed platform, proven to drive better results and lasting impact.”

WeightWatchers had filed for bankruptcy in the US in May in order to remove $1.15 billion (£840million) worth of debt from its balance sheet.

However, the company had continued to operate as normal – and there was no reported impact to members.

Dr. Boyd said: “WeightWatchers’ mission has never been more important, with nearly three-quarters of Americans and more than two billion people around the world affected by obesity or excess weight.

“We know just how profoundly weight impacts long-term health.”

WeightWatchers has long been a popular option for many people, in part due to its points system.

This encourages participants to make healthier food choices and manage portion sizes.

But it has faced challenges as weight-loss jabs soar in popularity.

Dr. Boyd added: “For more than six decades, WeightWatchers has supported tens of millions of people on their weight loss journeys.

“We’re expanding that legacy by combining the best tools of modern medicine, like GLP-1s, with science-backed lifestyle change and the power of community to deliver better outcomes.

We believe everyone deserves access to comprehensive care for sustainable weight health so they can live healthier, longer lives.”
